Help Midwest Books to Prisoners find a new space

The Orphanage, our beloved home since the early 2010’s, is under imminent threat of eviction because the new owner wants to demolish this historic building. A home to community organizers, mutual aid workers, activists and anyone looking for shelter from an unkind world: we are determined to defend the Orphanage and hope that we can stay as long-term tenants. But capitalist courts are cruel, so we need to be prepared with new spaces for both Midwest Books to Prisoners and El Comedor Comunitario. If you have any leads, please reach out! We are looking for a shared space where we can store our book shelves and pack books twice a week. Would your space like to host a beautiful library of donated books and some glorious printers? 📚🖨️🤗 We need a space that can contain roughly the following (though we could downsize if necessary):

  • 20 book shelves of various sizes (we pack & ship hundreds of books every week and continuously receive book donations)
  • 5 large folding tables for packing books (it is not uncommon for us to have 20+ volunteers in our space at a time)
  • 2 large printers (for the hundreds to thousands of zines we print for people inside as well as our local community every month!)
  • 1 computer desk

El Comedor Comunitario is looking for housing and kitchen / dining space. Ideally, we would love to be part of a multi-use space where these projects can stay together and co-exist with other like-minded projects. 💖
