"For fun I mostly read scifi, fantasy, and comics. I love comics so uch I have both the DC and Marvel encyclopedia, as well as plenty of comics and graphic novels. I rarely go out of my way to pick specific books. Those comic encyclopedias "Danger Girl" (Illustrated by one of my idols), "Morph Anatomy for Artists", "Comics Experience Guide to WRiting COmics", and a translation of the Chinese epic "Three Kingdoms" are chief among the few. 80% of my collection I've bought are things that were both cheap and interestiny. Since I live on a budget of about $600 per year, much of which is spent on hygiene and food staples like beans/rice. I generally won't pay more than $10 for a manga, $15 for a graphic novel, or roughly $1.50 per 100 pages of a novel.

Basically any important books I have my family order. Most recently I had a desire to learn how to paint portraits in watercolor, so I told my father that and he researched and ordered me a good guide. He also (of his own accord) subscribed me to "The Atlantic" magazine. It is nice to have some form of culture and intellectual thought in a place where most discussions have the depth of a puddle.

I also have a number of photo books. At least half are non-nude pin-up[ content, but given I'm an artist I have those for more than just a cheap thrill. Unlike most prison artists I've met, I don't copy works but I still need reference for [photorealistic illustrations (I do enjoy the irony of being a criminal who abhors copyright infringement).

I do utilize books-to-prisoner projects, not only because of my limited budge,t but because I've found value in having a stranger pick books for me. Sure, I get some duds, but I've also gotten amazing things I would never have picked for myself."
